USDA still culling feedback on school nutrition rules

The USDA is giving the public another month, until May 10, to weigh in on its proposed revisions to school meal nutrition rules that would have schools use mostly whole grain products starting in fall 2024, and sugar and sodium content to gradually be dialed down through 2029. The School Nutrition Association's comments urged the USDA to instead maintain the current nutrition guidelines that will take effect July 1 because "[w]ith no end in sight to supply chain and labor challenges, most school meal programs nationwide simply lack the capacity to meet these proposed nutrition mandates and exceed transitional standards."
