School meal debt in North Carolina has risen to $3.1 million, and a coalition called School Meals For All NC is calling for universal school meal access in the state. Morgan Wittman Gramman, a member of the group and executive director of the North Carolina Alliance for Health, argued that a statewide universal meal program would help cut down student hunger and reduce the stigma of free meals.
