Approximately 90% of school food programs have used USDA waivers, which are set to expire this summer, to serve free meals to all students during the coronavirus pandemic. Kelly Orton, director of child nutrition for the Salt Lake City School District, says school nutrition professionals now are bracing for the expiration of the waivers, comparing it to "pulling off the Band-Aid and hoping you don't bleed to death."
