Education leaders in N.C. push for meal waiver extension

North Carolina education officials are pushing their US senators to pass Senate Bill 3979, the "Support Kids not Red Tape Act of 2022," which would extend the free school meal waivers, set to expire June 30, through the 2022-23 school year. "Many households may have to choose between fueling their vehicles to go to work or providing meal money to students," said Lynn Harvey, director of the state Department of Public Instruction's school nutrition division. "We don't want families to face that hardship."
