FDA begins next phase of dietary sodium reduction efforts

The FDA announced it is starting Phase II of its effort to reduce sodium content in packaged and prepared foods, as well as school lunches, aiming to reduce intake to 2,750 milligrams. Current guidelines recommend 2,300 mg or about 1 teaspoon daily, but the FDA estimates, on average, most people are consuming 3,400 mg each day. "Reducing sodium in the food supply has the potential to be one of the most important public health initiatives in a generation," says Jim Jones, FDA deputy commissioner for human foods.
