Wis. superintendent proposes universal school meals
October 28, 2024
Wisconsin's State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jill Underly, has proposed making breakfast and lunch free for all K-12 students in the state, regardless of household income. The universal school meal program aims to address food insecurity, as highlighted by a survey showing 1 in 4 high schoolers experienced hunger due to lack of food at home. The $294 million proposal requires legislative approval, following a previous attempt by Governor Tony Evers that was not passed.
