New federal school nutrition standards add costs

The USDA's updated nutrition standards for schools, effective July 1, will cost districts an additional $206 million annually, according to the Congressional Research Service. These changes, focusing on reducing added sugars and sodium, lack dedicated federal funding but have some available resources.
