Interim study data presented by the NIH and the FDA suggest that not all ultraprocessed foods are equally harmful. Foods that are energy-dense and hyperpalatable, such as those high in fat, sugar and sodium, tend to lead to overeating and weight gain. However, packaged foods without these traits, such as low-sodium soups, refried beans and canned peaches, do not have the same negative effects.
