Vt. governor proposes ending universal school meals

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott has proposed ending the state's universal school meal program to keep property taxes in check, reverting to prepandemic federal benefits. The program, which costs $18 million, has been funded by the state's Education Fund since federal support ended. Supporters of the program say it helps families who don't qualify for federal aid but still struggle financially.
