Districts Tap Federal Funds To Pay For Free School Meals

Because of the high cost of living in the area, the San Francisco Unified School District has used funding from the federal Child and Adult Care Food Program to add free dinners to the district's breakfast and lunch program. Betti Wiggins, Houston Independent School District's nutrition services officer, also advocates that the federal government should fund universal school meals, which would eliminate administrative costs and paperwork needed for reimbursement that often burden school food programs.
