School meal changes could be a hardship for families

The USDA reports higher participation in school meals under federal meal waivers -- including an eight-times larger participation in summer meal programs during 2020, compared with the previous year. While Congress passed a measure to extend some provisions, families and advocates say the loss of free meals for all students regardless of income will create a hardship for many parents as inflation has driven up costs of food and fuel, among other things.
